Cultural Arts

The arts is a broad subdivision of culture, composed of many expressive disciplines. The arts encompasses visual; drawing, painting, photography, pottery, etc. and performing; music, dance and theatre.

The arts are crucial to every county. They are fundamental to a robust economy supporting economic development and promotion of tourism. The arts are a prime consideration in corporate relocation. They can revitalize neighborhoods and encourage investment. The arts build social connection and civic engagement.

Union County is blessed with many talented residents. Some of these residents perform outside the county. Several arts organizations were formed by those interested in the arts to expose the community to various art disciplines and showcase residents’ talents.

The Marysville Art League, which operates out of the Houston House, offers art history and appreciation seminars along with a variety of art instruction classes such as clay, pottery, jewelry, painting and photography. In addition, the league hosts gallery events to feature residents’ art work. The Marysville Public Library offers additional exhibit space to local artists and change every month.

Music is the soul of several communities. The Union County Community Concerts Association provides national and regional top notch entertainment throughout the year. The Outdoor Amphitheater Summer Music Series at the American Legion Park in Marysville, the Uptown Renewal Team’s Summer Friday events on the Courthouse Lawn and the Music in the Park series at Pastime Park in Plain City provides communities with a variety of complimentary musical entertainment in a natural environment during the summer.

The Marysville Public Library hosts monthlyart exhibitions.  The Marysville Library sponsors an author series each year featuring regionally known authors in the evening at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. In addition, the library hosts book signings throughout the year.

Several performing arts organizations exist in the county. Spotlight Theatre produces a variety of plays each year, while the Children’s Summer Theater Workshop produces one play (generally a musical); directed and produced by teenagers with a cast of children. A group of local talent has produced full scale musicals with an orchestra almost every summer since 1980. The Singsations troupe produces two lively musical reviews, one in the spring and one during the holiday season each year.

A new organization was formed this year, ENCORE!  This group composed of youth between the ages of 14 and 20 produce one musical a year. 

Union County is blessed to have several dance studios to teach youth and adults the artistry and expression of dance. Students of the dance studios perform regularly at community events throughout the county.

A representative from each of these organizations sits on the Union County Cultural partnership board. The mission of the partnership is to promote memorable arts within the county that enhance the quality of life through education, preservation and awareness.
